Consider the scene before you at the Kreuzigungsgruppe. This isn’t just stone and artistry. It is a silent echo of Konstanz’s complex story.

The Kreuzigungsgruppe stands as a timeless testament. It reflects both faith and the city’s long history. Konstanz has roots stretching back to the Stone Age. It was once a Roman fort called Constantia. The name possibly honors Emperor Constantius Chlorus.

Konstanz thrived in the Middle Ages. It became a strategic trade hub. Linen production brought international recognition. In 1192, Konstanz became an Imperial City. This meant it answered only to the Holy Roman Emperor.

The Council of Constance from 1414 to 1418 marked a crucial moment. Jan Hus, a Bohemian reformer, was burned at the stake here. The council also ended the Papal Schism. Pope Martin V was elected during this time. The only conclave ever held north of the Alps.

The Protestant Reformation arrived in Konstanz in the 1520s. Led by Ambrosius Blarer, the city turned Protestant. The bishop moved across the lake to Meersburg. However, Emperor Charles V later imposed the Imperial Ban on Konstanz. The city had to surrender to Habsburg Austria.

Konstanz became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806. Later, in 1871, it joined the German Empire. After World War I, it was part of the Republic of Baden.

Remarkably, Konstanz survived World War II unscathed. Its proximity to Switzerland, a neutral country, saved it. The city kept its lights on at night. Allied pilots mistook it for part of Switzerland.

However, Konstanz played a role in the German war effort. It produced parts for German submarines and guns. Jewish residents were deported to concentration camps in 1940.

Today, Konstanz is a vibrant city. Its old town boasts well-preserved buildings and winding alleys. The University of Konstanz is renowned. It has gained considerable reputation as a so-called “elite university”.

Konstanz has a unique relationship with Switzerland. Swiss shoppers flock here for lower prices. This cross-border shopping has sometimes caused friction.

The Kreuzigungsgruppe stands. It watches as the city evolves. It reminds us of Konstanz’s past. A past of faith, trade, conflict, and survival. It is a story etched in stone. A story that continues to unfold.
