Atop a rotating pedestal she reigns. Imperia. That’s her name. This nine-meter-tall concrete colossus. She stands defiantly. A controversial queen of Konstanz harbor.

Imperia is more than just a statue. She is a symbol. A testament to the Council of Constance. Held between 1414 and 1418. This pivotal council reshaped the Catholic Church. Three popes resigned. A new one was elected.

But Imperia doesn’t celebrate those lofty figures. Oh no. The artist Peter Lenk had a different idea. He created a satirical masterpiece. Imperia holds two men aloft. They resemble Pope Martin V and Emperor Sigismund. Yet Lenk insists they are fools. Fools who grasped secular and spiritual power.

This brazen statue was secretly erected in 1993. It caused quite a stir. The sculpture is on private property. A rail company owned the land. They didn’t object. The controversy only added to Imperia’s allure. She quickly became a Konstanz landmark.

Imperia’s story goes beyond Konstanz. It draws inspiration from Balzac’s “La Belle Imperia”. A sharp satire of church morals. Imperia in Balzac’s tale seduces cardinals and princes. She wields immense power. The historical Imperia though was an Italian courtesan. She died long after the council. She never even set foot in Konstanz.

Look closely. Notice the detail. Imperia’s pose is provocative. The men she holds are naked. This powerful woman is in control. She reminds us of the complex power dynamics at play during the council.

The rotating pedestal adds another layer. It’s a subtle nod to the ever-changing nature of power. Every four minutes Imperia completes a full rotation. It’s a continuous cycle. A mesmerizing dance of history and satire.

Imperia. She is more than just a statue. She is a captivating story. A story of power. Intrigue. And a healthy dose of irreverence. She is Konstanz.
