Here stands the Kunstgrenze Sculpture, not as a barrier, but as a bridge. Since 2007, these 22 unique sculptures have marked the border between Germany and Switzerland. They stand for a new border culture, that serves as a model for many other border regions.

The Kunstgrenze sculptures reside in the area known as Klein Venedig. This land was created in the 1950s and 60s by using it as a landfill. It was covered with a layer of earth and completed in 1968. The border here, secured by a fence since 1973, now hosts a symbol of unity.

These aren’t just any sculptures. Johannes Dörflinger, a Konstanz artist, created them. Each of the Kunstgrenze sculptures represents a Tarot card. You’ll see figures like the Magician, the Empress, the Wheel of Fortune, and the Fool. They embody different aspects of human existence. These sculptures invite you to contemplate and interpret.

Andreas Netzle, the Kreuzlingen City President, highlighted its symbolic meaning in 2017. He said that the border fence was not just removed. It wasn’t about pretending borders don’t exist. Instead, the impenetrable barrier was replaced. This Kunstgrenze Sculpture can be walked through. It makes people aware of the border in an artistic way.

Uli Burchardt, Konstanz Mayor, emphasized the Kunstgrenze Sculpture’s relevance. Ten years ago, Konstanz and Kreuzlingen opened the world’s first art border. Now that the closing of borders is being discussed worldwide, this artwork is more relevant than ever. Art can open borders and create meeting spaces. Our Kunstgrenze has become a symbol for a Europe of open borders. It believes in its peace-building values as a common base for the future.

What makes the Kunstgrenze Sculpture truly unique? The sculptures don’t just stand near the border. They stand directly on it. Each sculpture straddles both Swiss and German territory. This symbolizes the connection between the two cities.

Many people helped make this project a reality. It was made possible by the cooperation of both cities. Numerous authorities were involved. The Johannes Dörflinger Foundation played a key role. Based in Kreuzlingen, the foundation contributed around CHF 1,000,000 to the project.

The Kunstgrenze Sculpture has become a popular attraction. The eight-meter-high sculptures attract tourists. It’s also a political statement. In 2007, it was presented at the Congress of the Council of Europe. It was recognized as a symbol of a free Europe without borders. It was a milestone in the relationship between Germany and Switzerland.

Looking back, removing the border fence was historic. For centuries, the border was open. Controls were only at road crossings. The situation changed during National Socialism. In 1939, a fence was built between Kreuzlingen and Wiesenstrasse. It also went between the railway line, the lake, Paradise and Tägermoos.

The Kunstgrenze Sculpture, standing tall and red above its base, is a testament to peace. It shows the power of art to unite. As you stand here, consider the open border. Think about the shared values and the future we can build together.
