Let me tell you the story of Schloss Mainau, the jewel of Lake Constance. This island paradise beckons with vibrant colors and fragrant blooms. It is a testament to nature’s artistry.

Mainau’s story stretches back to ancient times. Traces of settlements dating back to 3000 BC have been discovered here. Even the Romans recognized its strategic importance. They established a naval base on Mainau under Emperor Tiberius to control Lake Constance.

However, the island’s more recent history truly shaped its character. In the 13th century, the Teutonic Order took control. They ruled Mainau for the next 500 years. The castle itself dates back to their reign. It was completed in 1746.

During the Napoleonic era, the Teutonic Order was dissolved. Mainau then became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806.

Grand Duke Frederick I is considered the founder of Mainau’s botanical gardens. He transformed Mainau into his summer residence. He brought back exotic plants and trees from his travels. The Arboretum, Italian Rose Garden, and Orangery all date back to his time.

Through inheritance, Mainau passed into the hands of the Swedish royal family. Eventually, it was owned by the Bernadotte family. They had to renounce royal claims due to marriage.

The “flower island” flourished in the 1950s. Much of Mainau is now protected. It is recognized as a place of significant cultural value. The island is managed by a charitable foundation established by the family.

Prince Lennart Bernadotte truly embraced Mainau. He lovingly called his island “Blumenschiff,” meaning flower ship. He said that Mainau “constantly demands much attention, even more love and ceaselessly new clothes.” He was referring to the ever-changing blossoms and flowerbeds.

The Arboretum is home to 500 different types of rare broad-leaved trees and conifers. Grand Duke Friedrich I created it in 1856. You can find some of Germany’s oldest dawn redwood trees here. The giant redwoods are particularly impressive. Their seeds came from California in 1853. They were planted on Mainau in 1864. This makes them some of the oldest in Europe.

From March to May, Mainau explodes with color. Tulips, daffodils, primroses, and hyacinths bloom in abundance.

The Italian rose garden is a geometric masterpiece. Friedrich I commissioned it. Pergolas, sculptures, and fountains adorn the space. Over 1200 kinds of roses thrive on the island.

The Mediterranean Terrace showcases exotic plants. Palm trees, agaves, cacti, and bougainvillea bask in the sun. You can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Constance and the Alps from here.

In autumn, the South Garden is transformed. Fields of dahlias bloom with approximately 20,000 bushes. They represent 250 varieties.

Don’t miss the Butterfly House. It is the second largest in Germany. Thousands of butterflies flutter within its walls.

Mainau is more than just a garden. It is a place where history, nature, and royal legacy intertwine. It is a place where you can lose yourself in beauty. Take your time here. Enjoy the sensory delights. Let the magic of Mainau enchant you.
