A shiver runs down your spine. You stand before the ehemalige Synagoge sculpture in Konstanz. Its stark simplicity speaks volumes. This isn’t just a monument. It’s a poignant reminder of a community lost. A community that thrived here for centuries. Only to be brutally extinguished.

The ehemalige Synagoge in Konstanz a place of prayer and gathering was built in 1883. Architect Karl Holzmann designed it in a Romanesque style. It stood on Sigismundstrasse 19. Imagine the bustling life within its walls. The sounds of prayers and song. The warmth of community. This was a vibrant heart beating in the city of Konstanz.

Sadly this vibrant life was short-lived. In 1936 a fire severely damaged the synagogue. The Torah scrolls the organ and other sacred objects were destroyed. The Nazi regime systematically persecuted the Jewish people. The attack foreshadowed greater horrors.

Then came Kristallnacht. The night of November 9 1938. SS men stormed the synagogue. They set it ablaze. They didn’t allow the firefighters to extinguish the flames. The ruined building was finally demolished the next morning. Sixteen Jewish men were taken to the Dachau concentration camp.

The destruction of the synagogue was a symbol of the devastation inflicted on the Jewish community. Many members were deported to the Gurs camp in France. Many perished in the camps of the East. The Konstanz Jewish community was effectively wiped out.

Yet even in the face of such tragedy hope remained. Shimon Sigmund Nissenbaum a survivor established a makeshift prayer room. This was in 1964 at the very site of the destroyed synagogue. His actions were a testament to resilience and faith. It was a small act but it symbolized the enduring spirit of the Jewish people.

The sculpture you see today is more than just stone. It represents the resilience of the Jewish community of Konstanz. It stands as a stark reminder of the past. It is a beacon of hope for the future. It is a testament to those who were lost and a tribute to those who survived. The ehemalige Synagoge sculpture is a powerful symbol in the heart of Konstanz. It encourages remembrance and reflection. It invites us to learn from the past to build a more just and tolerant future. Let us honor their memory and commit ourselves to never forgetting.
