Matthäuskirche

In 1956, the church bells of Niederzwehren rang out a new name: Matthäuskirche. But the story of this church, nestled in Kassel, began long before this renaming. Imagine Kassel in 1235. A priest named Conrad von Tweren is mentioned in a document, a witness to a pact between Haina Monastery and the Dean of Fritzlar. This priest served a church that stood on the very ground where Matthäuskirche stands today. This early church, however, met a tragic end. It was largely destroyed by the late 14th century. Hope returned with Landgrave Ludwig the Peaceful, who ruled from 1413 to 1458. He ordered the church’s reconstruction, dedicating it to St. Agatha. A protective tower, a common feature in those turbulent times, was completed in 1472. A sturdy wall with embrasures encircled the churchyard, further safeguarding the sacred space. Disaster struck again in 1552. A lightning bolt ignited the tower’s spire. The tower was faithfully restored, but the church building itself suffered over time. By the late 18th century, the building was in dire straits. In 1788, sections of the gallery collapsed. Demolition of the nave began on February 25, 1789. Remarkably, the foundation stone of the new nave was laid just a month later, on March 31, 1789. The new church was inaugurated on August 15, 1790. With the construction of the Graf Haeseler Barracks, the church was intended to serve as a garrison church. It proved too small, however. Several plans were drawn up to expand the church or build a new one. Finally, in 1913, construction began on a south-facing annex. This expanded church was inaugurated on August 16, 1914. The church continued to evolve. In 1955, renovations transformed part of the area under the organ gallery into community rooms. The sacristy was relocated to the ground floor of the defense tower, becoming the altar area. This marked the moment the church was renamed Matthäuskirche, officially consecrated on December 2, 1956. The Matthäuskirche underwent a significant transformation in 1984. The 1913 annex was demolished. A new, lower annex was built to house the community hall and other rooms. The interior was completely redesigned. The altar and pulpit were placed in the center of the north side. Seating was arranged in a semicircle. This renovated space was inaugurated on December 1, 1985. Even in recent years, the Matthäuskirche has seen renewals. New bells were cast and dedicated in 2016. From its earliest days to its modern form, the Matthäuskirche has been a constant presence in the lives of the people of Niederzwehren. It has weathered storms, both literal and figurative, and stands as a testament to faith and resilience.
