Nestled on Wilhelmshhöhe hill, the Wilhelmsgymnasium Kassel has witnessed history unfold since its inauguration in 1886. Originally named “Königliches Wilhelms-Gymnasium,” this grand institution was a gift from the Prussian state. It aimed to accommodate the burgeoning student population overflowing from the Friedrichsgymnasium. Wilhelmsgymnasium proudly bears the name of Prussian King and German Emperor Wilhelm I. The school’s early years were marked by growth and prestige, drawing both students and teachers from the established Friedrichsgymnasium. This golden era, however, came to a crashing halt during World War II. The original Wilhelmsgymnasium building was tragically destroyed in the bombings that ravaged Kassel. During the war, the resourceful headmaster, Oberstudiendirektor Paeckelmann, found refuge for the school in various locations. Some students were sent to military barracks in Schwarzenborn, while others found themselves sharing space with Soviet prisoners of war. In 1944, increasing danger forced the entire school to relocate to Neukirchen, Berndorf, and Wetter. Wilhelmsgymnasium even played a role in helping two persecuted half-Jewish students, Peter Scholl-Latour and Wolfgang Herzog, graduate in 1943. Scholl-Latour later returned with the US Army, facilitating trust between the Americans and the school’s director. After the war, Wilhelmsgymnasium resumed operations in 1946 at the Torwache am Wilhelmshöher Platz. The school community, significantly enlarged by displaced persons, gradually rebuilt itself. The current Wilhelmsgymnasium building wasn’t completed until 1962, marking a new chapter in the school’s history. A poignant reminder of the past, an owl statue, rescued from the original building’s ruins, now graces the entrance. This owl, a symbol of wisdom and knowledge in Greek mythology, also serves as the school’s emblem. Wilhelmsgymnasium has continued to evolve, embracing co-education in 1968 and expanding its facilities in 1985 and again in 2010 with a new sports hall and cafeteria. Today, Wilhelmsgymnasium Kassel thrives, educating around 1200 students and carrying forward a legacy of resilience, adaptation, and academic excellence. Did you know that from 2002 to 2013, a former champion pole-vaulter, Hans-Jürgen Ziegler, served as the school’s principal? This fact adds another unique layer to the rich tapestry of Wilhelmsgymnasium’s history.
