Brückenhof

Amidst Kassel’s urban tapestry lies Brückhof, a neighborhood brimming with stories. Brückhof emerged in the late 1960s. It stands as a testament to Kassel’s efforts to address the pressing housing shortage following World War II. The city faced a surge in displaced families, evacuees, refugees, and large families. Brückhof, with its modern prefabricated high-rise complexes, offered a solution. These buildings reflect the typical architectural style of social housing projects from the 1960s and 70s. GEWOBAG spearheaded the construction of this large-scale housing project. In 1966, the initial phase provided homes for 3500 people. This initial construction cost 46.5 million Deutsche Mark. The 556 apartments built averaged 72 square meters in size. The topping-out ceremony took place on October 17, 1966. Brückhof remains a vibrant community. In 2017, the population stood at 5645, with a balanced gender distribution. Nearly half of the residents were 45 years or older. Brückhof is a melting pot of cultures. A significant 76% of the population has a migration background. 34% of these residents hold dual citizenship. The largest groups hail from the Russian Federation, Poland, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. A considerable number of residents are also German repatriates. Brückhof is well-connected to Kassel’s public transport network. Tram lines 2, 3, 6, and 7 provide easy access to the rest of the city. The neighborhood extends along Brückenhofstraße, Heinrich-Plett-Straße, Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Straße, and Korbacher Straße. Brückhof continues to evolve. Plans are underway to construct up to 350 new apartments over the next decade. This initiative aims to alleviate the current housing shortage and address the need for smaller apartments. The urban development plan includes the addition of two modern high-rise buildings on Heinrich-Plett-Straße. Recent years have also seen a focus on energy-efficient renovations. The Brückhof kindergarten underwent a 1.27 million Euro renovation in 2019, incorporating ecological and energy-saving measures. The Willy-Brandt vocational school, located within the district, is currently undergoing energy-efficient renovations, with an estimated cost of 21 million Euros. Brückhof stands as a symbol of resilience, adaptation, and community in Kassel.
