The Planetenwanderweg is more than a path. It’s a journey through our solar system. A 1:495 million scale model it shrinks the immense distances and size differences of the planets into a walkable experience.
Imagine starting at the Orangerie. The sun a large painted disc above its glass entrance marks the beginning. From there you’d walk past tiny representations of Mercury and Venus. The Earth is a walnut-sized sphere. You would continue along the Karlsaue’s axis towards Mars Jupiter and Saturn.
But here you stand before Uranus. It’s located outside the Karlsaue. It’s quite a trek from the sun. The model of Uranus is half-embedded in a stainless steel plate. The plate displays interesting information.
The Planetenwanderweg wasn’t completed until 2021. The final addition Neptune sits nine kilometers away near the R1 cycle path in Guntershausen. It’s a testament to the project’s ambition. The scale of the model is mind-boggling. The sun’s diameter at the Orangerie is a substantial 2.8 meters. The distance between the sun and tiny Mercury is 50 meters.
