Ahle Wurscht the aroma hangs heavy in the air. This is the Kassel Markthalle a place steeped in history.

Before you stands a building with a fascinating past. It’s not just a marketplace it’s a reincarnation. This building occupies the site of the Kassel Marstall a 1593 horse stable. The original Marstall was more than just stables. It housed a library and a Kunstkammer a collection of art and curiosities.

Imagine Landgraf Wilhelm IV’s prized horses stabled here. Imagine the hushed reverence in the library above. Picture the gleaming treasures of the Kunstkammer. This building whispers tales of rulers and horses of books and art.

The Marstall served many purposes over the centuries. It was even a Prussian barracks. Sadly World War II heavily damaged the building. The ruins were later cleared to make way for the Markthalle we see today.

The current building which opened in 1966 is a clever reconstruction. The architect Werner Noell cleverly mirrored the original facade. He paid homage to the Marstall’s history.
