Envision a beacon of peace amidst the everyday hustle. That’s Herz Mariae in Kassel-Harleshausen. This Roman Catholic church offers solace amid the constant car noise right outside its doors.
Herz Mariae’s story began long before its physical presence. The growing number of Catholic Christians in Harleshausen needed a place to worship. Before Herz Mariae was built, the local Protestant community offered their church for Catholic services. This shows a beautiful spirit of cooperation. The Erlöserkirche opened its doors showing true Christian fellowship.
Finally, after almost 20 years of planning, Herz Mariae was consecrated on August 11, 1957. Dedicated to the purest Heart of Mary, it became a vital part of the community. The patronage feast is celebrated on the Saturday after the Sacred Heart Feast.
Josef Bieling designed Herz Mariae. His architectural style reflects the post-war modern era. The church’s floor plan resembles a large egg. It is a prime example of church architecture from the 1950s. In 1990, Herz Mariae received landmark protection status. Its tower reaches 27 meters high. The cross on top adds another eight meters. Inside, the church seats about 500 people.
The narrowing form of the church guides your eyes toward the altar. Above the altar, wavy ribs of the white concrete ceiling seem to radiate into the space. Erika-Maria Wiegand created the terracotta altar cross in 1983. She envisioned it as a “grown tree.” Her goal was to transform a symbol of shame into a tree of life. The cross stands 3.20 meters tall.
Two narrow stained-glass windows flank the altar cross. These windows feature repeating motifs. You will find crosses, hearts, fish, and anchors.
In 1993, Erika-Maria Wiegand also created the Stations of the Cross for Herz Mariae. These stations are located on the left side of the church. They are placed at different heights. This design invites you to walk the Way of the Cross. Unlike traditional depictions, these Stations of the Cross do not end with the tomb. The 15th station shows the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It offers a message of hope.
