What if a frame could hold more than just a picture? What if it could frame an entire landscape? Right here on Friedrichsplatz, the Rahmenbau sculpture does just that. Rahmenbau, also known as Landschaft im Dia (Landscape in the Slide), isn’t just a static piece of steel. It’s an interactive experience, a gateway to a different way of seeing. Created by the Haus-Rucker-Co group for documenta 6 in 1977, Rahmenbau has become a beloved Kassel landmark. This large steel grid frame, 14 meters tall and wide, stands at the edge of Friedrichsplatz, overlooking the Karlsaue park. A smaller brass frame, measuring 2.8 meters square, is suspended from the main frame, extending outwards towards the park. This smaller frame acts like a lens, focusing your view on the Orangerie. The Rahmenbau invites you to walk across a narrow steel walkway that leads from the terrace towards the smaller frame. As you walk along this walkway, you leave the initial framed view and become part of the landscape picture yourself. Now you’re in the frame, looking back at the city through the larger frame, with a whole new perspective. This interplay of frames creates a layered experience. You see the panoramic view, the focused view, and then you become part of the view itself. It’s a visual game that changes with every step. Originally intended as a temporary installation, the Rahmenbau quickly captured the hearts of Kassel residents. It became known as a symbol of documenta 6. In 1979, the Kasseler Sparkasse purchased the artwork and gifted it to the city. Now, this unique piece of “provisory architecture” permanently graces the cityscape. The Haus-Rucker-Co group envisioned Rahmenbau as a way to heighten our awareness of the environment. By framing the landscape, they force us to see it anew, to appreciate the ever-present beauty that we often overlook. It is a reminder to look, to see, and to experience the world with fresh eyes, framed by a masterpiece of modern art.
