Across the Fulda River, the Blue Dancer hangs suspended, a mesmerizing bridge between Kassel’s past and present. This isn’t just any sculpture. It’s a 10-meter-long light stick of frosted plexiglass, pulsating with blue neon light. Two galvanized steel buckets dangle below, suspended from a wire cable that stretches 100 meters across the river. The Blue Dancer connects the historic Renthof and the remnants of Kassel’s old town with the rebuilt Unterneustadt. This area, once devastated in 1943, lay in ruins for decades before its revitalization in the 1990s. The Blue Dancer, a creation of Japanese artist Kazuo Katase, embodies the tension between destruction and reconstruction, old and new. Katase, who has lived and worked in Kassel since 1975, imbued the Blue Dancer with his own experience of bridging cultures. Here, they say I’m too Japanese.” The blue of the Dancer’s light stick isn’t arbitrary. It represents distance and limitlessness, depth and density.
