“They say these walls whisper secrets” a woman’s voice cuts through the air. We stand before Schloss Schönfeld in Kassel a magnificent structure bathed in afternoon sunlight. Built in 1777 by General Nikolaus Heinrich von Schönfeld as his summer residence Schloss Schönfeld has seen it all. Imagine the grand celebrations hosted by Jérôme Bonaparte King of Westphalen. He bought it from the banker Carl Jordans who had turned it into a hub for some of Germany’s most celebrated Romantic writers. Clemens Brentano Achim von Arnim and the Brothers Grimm all exchanged ideas here.

The castle changed hands many times. Landgrave Wilhelm IX took over in 1790. Then it passed to Andries Hendrik Thorbecke who dreamt of a tobacco factory here but never got the permits. After Napoleon’s conquests the castle fell into the hands of Jérôme Bonaparte. He made major improvements under architect Leo von Klenze. He held extravagant parties that resonated through the halls.

The castle also witnessed quieter moments. Jenny von Gustedt a lady-in-waiting and author was born here in 1811. Later Princess Auguste wife of Wilhelm II lived here surrounded by her circle a group of Romantics who opposed her husband. She oversaw another construction phase including the central pavilion and connecting wing under master builder Johann Conrad Bromeis. This era added to the romantic charm of the palace.

The castle experienced further changes with the annexation of Hesse by Prussia. Generalleutnant Richard von Kalkreuth resided here until 1879. Then the Prussian state gifted the property to the Hesse-Philippsthal line. Prince Karl lived here until 1888. Later a short-lived zoo occupied the grounds.

World War II brought destruction. Bombing raids devastated the west wing damaging the central section. After the war the castle housed a restaurant. Renovations followed in 1933 and 1965. The Schloss Schönfeld served as a military prison and hospital during World War I.

Today the Verein Schloss Schönfeld e V a private association owns Schloss Schönfeld. After extensive renovations concluding in 1992 the castle hosts events and a club. The restaurant Park Schönfeld occupies part of the building. The castle’s fountain features a bronze sculpture of Hermann and Dorothea a tribute to Goethe’s epic. This perfectly embodies the blend of history and culture that defines Schloss Schönfeld. This castle has been more than just bricks and mortar.
