Overlooking Kassel, the Bismarckturm stands proudly on the Brasselsberg. Have you ever wondered about the stories whispered within these basalt stones? The Kassel Bismarckturm isn’t just any tower. It’s a “Götterdämmerung” design, the tallest of its kind, reaching a height of 25.5 meters. Inaugurated on September 2, 1904, it was a project of the Verschönerungsverein Kassel, a local beautification association. The tower’s construction is a testament to local craftsmanship. Basalt and basalt tuff, quarried nearby in the Hoher Habichtswald, form the sturdy structure and outer veneer. Inside, a winding staircase, once basalt and now stainless steel, leads to the observation deck. This platform, perched high above the city at 456.3 meters above sea level, offers breathtaking panoramic views. Imagine gazing out across the Kassel basin, the surrounding mountains unfolding before you. The Reinhardswald to the north, the Kaufunger Wald and Söhre to the east. On a clear day, you might even glimpse the Brocken in the Harz Mountains, the Hoher Meißner, or the Großer Inselsberg in the Thuringian Forest. Closer to the city, the Volkswagenwerk in Baunatal is visible, partially hidden by the Baunsberg. To the southwest, the Langenberge stretch across the horizon. And closer still, peering through the trees of the Habichtswald, the majestic Hercules statue keeps watch. The Bismarckturm has weathered its share of storms, both literal and figurative. A lightning strike in 1962 damaged the northwest balustrade, requiring extensive repairs. More recently, in 2010, the internal staircase was replaced due to significant wear and tear. But through it all, the tower has endured, a steadfast symbol of Kassel’s history and a beacon for those seeking breathtaking views. As you descend the tower, carry with you the whispers of the past, the panoramic splendor of the present, and the promise of a return visit to the magnificent Bismarckturm on the Brasselsberg.
