Löwenburg Castle, nestled within the Bergpark Wilhelmshhöhe, appears from afar as a crumbling medieval ruin. It’s a carefully crafted illusion. The castle was built between 1793 and 1801. Its design, overseen by court architect Heinrich Christoph Jussow, is a playful homage to a bygone era. Löwenburg was intended as a pleasure palace. It was a place where the Landgrave could indulge his passion for collecting. Inside, you’ll find historical furniture, paintings, and tapestries. There’s a magnificent collection of weapons and medieval stained glass. The castle’s design extends beyond its walls. The surrounding landscape was also meticulously crafted to enhance the medieval atmosphere. A castle garden, vineyard, tournament square, and even a zoo were incorporated into the design.
