Welcome to Tierpark Oberwald a unique animal park nestled within Karlsruhe’s Oberwald forest. Established in 1967 this remarkable park wasn’t planned. The Karlsruhe Zoo needed space for the 1967 Bundesgartenschau. Some animals were temporarily moved to the Oberwald. This temporary solution became a beloved attraction.
Tierpark Oberwald is more than just a zoo. It’s a conservation success story. Sprawling across 12 hectares it’s home to over 100 animals from 12 species. Many are endangered including the majestic Przewalski’s horse and the powerful European bison. These animals thrive in large enclosures mimicking their natural habitats.
But Tierpark Oberwald’s reach extends beyond its core area. It has expanded into the surrounding forests. You’ll find wild boar enclosures in Grünwettersbach and Hohenwettersbach. Rappenwört boasts wild boar fallow deer and red deer enclosures. The park’s dedication to conservation is remarkable. Young Przewalski’s horses born here have been successfully reintroduced to the wild in Asia.
The park isn’t just about preserving endangered species. It’s also a place of unique experiences. Unlike many zoos you can cycle here. You can even bring your dog provided it’s on a leash. However feeding the animals is strictly prohibited. This ensures their health and well-being.
