Can you hear the echoes of faith in the Waldstadt district? Here stands the Emmaus Kirche. This is not just a building. It’s a testament to a community’s spirit. The Emmaus Kirche emerged from a need. Waldstadt grew rapidly after 1957. By 1959, 5,500 people lived here. Half were of the Protestant faith. They needed a place to worship.
Initially, services were held in a kindergarten barrack. Imagine holding services in a temporary space. Architect Peter Salzbrenner won the competition to design a new church. His vision would give the community a permanent home.
On September 19, 1965, the bells of the new tower rang for the first time. Four bells announced the arrival of a new spiritual center. The Emmaus Kirche and its community center were dedicated on December 19, 1965. This special day was the fourth Sunday of Advent. Construction cost 2.4 million DM.
The Emmaus Kirche saw several expansions from 1980 to 1991. A windfang was added for comfort. A handicapped accessible entrance was built. This made the church more welcoming. The church faced significant challenges starting in 2005. The concrete parts needed extensive renovation. Storm damage in 2001 required a new roof. Asbestos and PCB contamination had to be removed. The initial cost estimate of 200,000 euros ballooned to one million. Donations, grants, and loans covered the expenses. The altar area was redesigned during this time. The rededication took place on July 30, 2006.
Look closely at the outer wall. You will see a relief by Gottfried Gruner. It adds artistic beauty to the building’s exterior. The Emmaus Kirche embodies community. It represents perseverance. It stands as a symbol of faith in Waldstadt. The Emmaus Kirche continues to be a vital part of Karlsruhe.
