Pause here and let your gaze drift over the serene waters of the Erlachsee. This seemingly natural lake has a fascinating story. It is a testament to both human intervention and nature’s resilience. The Erlachsee is nestled within the Oberwald forest in the southern part of Karlsruhe. It is not entirely a product of nature.

The Erlachsee owes its existence to the construction of the Reichsautobahn in the 1930s. Gravel was extracted from this area to build the highway. This excavation created the initial lake basin. Further construction work on the Südtangente in 1969 and 1970 led to more gravel extraction. This expanded the lake to its current size.

What was once a construction site was then transformed into a haven for nature. After the gravel extraction ceased, the area was carefully recultivated. This was done with a focus on nature conservation. Today, the Erlachsee boasts a depth of up to thirteen meters. It is a protected natural area.

The Erlachsee officially became a Naturschutzgebiet or nature reserve on November 30 1983. The Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe oversees its protection. Spanning approximately 16.4 hectares, the area includes the lake. It also includes the surrounding alder and ash woodland.

The primary goal of protecting the Erlachsee is to preserve its unique ecosystem. The lake features shallow water zones and reed beds. These habitats are vital for numerous threatened plant and animal species. The Erlachsee is also part of the larger Fauna-Flora-Habitat area “Oberwald und Alb in Karlsruhe”. It is part of the Natura 2000 network.

Birdwatchers will find the Erlachsee particularly rewarding. The lake provides crucial breeding grounds for birds. These include the little ringed plover. Migratory birds also find the Erlachsee to be an important stopover. The varying water depths create attractive feeding grounds.

During the winter months, the Erlachsee becomes a refuge for diving and swimming ducks. They seek shelter in its calm waters. The Erlachsee provides a safe haven for them. The lake contributes significantly to the region’s biodiversity.

In 2011, an interesting event occurred at the Erlachsee. A floating platform used as a breeding island for rare bird species sank. The Technisches Hilfswerk or THW was called in to salvage it. The platform had developed a leak. Styrofoam used for buoyancy was threatening to pollute the area.

Today, the Erlachsee stands as a beautiful example of ecological restoration. What started as a gravel pit has become a thriving habitat. It supports a diverse range of flora and fauna. It is a place where visitors can appreciate the beauty of nature. The Erlachsee shows us how nature can reclaim and repurpose spaces.
