Who is this goddess, radiating serenity amidst the splashing water? This, my friends, is the Hygieia-Brunnen. It’s a symphony of bronze and water, dedicated to Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health. The Hygieia-Brunnen isn’t just a pretty face. It’s a piece of Karlsruhe’s history, gifted to the city by Wilhelm Klose between 1905 and 1909. The sculptor, Johannes Hirt, brought Klose’s vision to life. Notice the detail. Hygieia stands regally on a pedestal. A serpent drinks from a cup in her right hand. A pitcher pours forth in her left. These aren’t just artistic flourishes. They symbolize the healing power of water. The Hygieia-Brunnen is more than just a fountain; it’s a narrative. See the playful children around the rim of the basin? They represent those who benefit from Hygieia’s gifts of health and cleanliness. The herons and fish heads spouting water add to the lively scene. The inscriptions, “Fliesse rein und hell / der Gesundheit Quell” (Flow pure and bright / the source of health) and “Gib den Starken Mut / Kranken frisches Blut” (Give the strong courage / the sick fresh blood), amplify the fountain’s message. The Hygieia-Brunnen has seen its share of drama. During both World Wars, its artistic merit saved it from being melted down for metal. More recently, one of the bronze children was stolen. It was later found in a forest near Bellheim, temporarily renamed the “Spiegelbachnixe” before being returned to its rightful place. Today, the Hygieia-Brunnen stands proudly before the Vierordtbad, a testament to the enduring power of art and the importance of health. Its story continues to flow, as vibrant and refreshing as the water it so gracefully displays.
