High above Karlsruhe’s city center stands Der Lauterberg a man-made hill. Its creation was far from ordinary. It wasn’t born of natural forces but of human ingenuity. Let me tell you the story of Der Lauterberg Plaque and this remarkable hill.

Der Lauterberg Plaque commemorates a fascinating project. It celebrates the creation of this artificial hill. Built between 1889 and 1893 it served a vital purpose. It provided Karlsruhe with a crucial water reservoir. Imagine the city’s growth demanding more water. This hill solved the problem.

The hill’s construction was ingenious. The earth came from the excavation of two nearby lakes. The resulting landscape included the Schwanensee and the Lautersee. This artificial hill was cleverly designed. Its height ensured sufficient water pressure. The water even reached the tallest building in Karlsruhe at the time: the Schlossturm.

The water reservoir inside Der Lauterberg held 3200 cubic meters of water. The city waterworks operated it from 1893 to 1967. After its closure the reservoir was filled with concrete. This prevented the metal structure from rusting. A smart precaution for lasting safety.

The hill itself rises about 40 meters above the city. Today you can reach the summit via a bird sanctuary educational trail. Once a striking artificial ruin with a tower stood at the top. It was constructed from stone remnants of the Rastatt Fortress. This was replaced in 1958 with the current platform.

Interestingly during World War II Der Lauterberg housed an anti-aircraft gun. A silent sentinel guarding the city below.

Der Lauterberg’s name honors Wilhelm Florentin Lauter. He was Karlsruhe’s mayor from 1870 to 1892. He initiated the project but sadly didn’t live to see its completion. The city council officially named the hill in his honor on May 12 1892 a fitting tribute.
