Fourteen men. A single stele. A story of defiance. This is the Réseau Alliance Stele. It stands as a stark reminder of sacrifice. A tribute to resistance fighters.
This unassuming stone monument in Karlsruhe tells a powerful story. It commemorates fourteen brave men. They were members of the Réseau Alliance. This was a French resistance group. They fought against Nazi occupation during World War II.
The Réseau Alliance was far more than a simple resistance network. Its roughly 3000 members. About a quarter were women. They engaged in espionage. They gathered intelligence on troop movements. They even tracked supply ships and U-boats. They risked their lives providing crucial information to the Allies. They also forged documents. They helped Jews escape. They guided people to safety across borders. They supported families of persecuted individuals.
Betrayal shattered their network. In early 1943 twelve of the men eventually executed in Karlsruhe were arrested. Their arrests occurred in Marseille Béziers and near Toulouse. They were transported to Freiburg via Paris. A court in Torgau sentenced them to death. They were transferred to Bruchsal prison.
Two Belgian resistance fighters faced a similar fate. They were condemned in Brussels. Their crime Supporting the enemy. Possessing weapons and ammunition. Their journey took them through Brussels Cologne and Koblenz. They arrived in Bruchsal prison in February 1944.
On April 1 1944 a grim dawn broke. The fourteen men were taken from their cells. They were brought to the Wehrmacht execution ground in the Hardtwald forest. Between 7:06 and 7:35 am they were shot. A firing squad from Ludwigsburg carried out the executions.
