Envision, if you will, a vibrant hub where music dances with laughter. That’s the Kulturzentrum Tollhaus. It’s more than just a building. It is a cornerstone of Karlsruhe’s cultural scene.
The Kulturzentrum Tollhaus started small. Bernd Belschner and Britta Vehagen founded it in 1982. It was a social cultural center. Imagine a humble stage within an old abattoir. That was its origin. Today, the Kulturzentrum Tollhaus is a sprawling complex. It has two stages. It offers spaces for workshops and forums.
What makes the Kulturzentrum Tollhaus special? Its multi-genre program. You can experience concerts. All kinds of music are presented. Dance performances occur regularly. There is theatre and comedy. Circus art amazes the crowds.
But the Kulturzentrum Tollhaus offers even more. It hosts three annual festivals. There is “Zeltival.” It focuses mainly on concerts. “Platz da!” is a one-day street theatre festival. “ATOLL” celebrates contemporary circus art. The Kulturzentrum Tollhaus also co-produces circus art creations. Workshops, forums, and exhibitions cover cultural, political, and social topics.
The Kulturzentrum Tollhaus attracts over 150000 people annually. It is a member of several networks. These include LAKS Baden-Württemberg and Creole. It also supports Initiative Neuer Zirkus Deutschland and Circostrada.
Since 1992, the Kulturzentrum Tollhaus has been located on the grounds of the former slaughterhouse in Ostauepark. This area is a protected historical site. It is part of a business conversion. The goal is to blend culture with related businesses. Since 2010, the Kulturzentrum Tollhaus has two halls. One seats 750. The other seats 450. There are also foyers for performances. Annually, around 250 events occur. They attract about 100000 visitors.
The Kulturzentrum Tollhaus continues to evolve. A restructuring in 2009 added a second hall. This expansion created new event possibilities. The Kulturverein Tollhaus e. V. supports the center. It was founded in 1982. It emerged from a folk club. Now, it has about 250 members.
During summer, “Zeltival” takes place. It is a multi-week festival. The festival’s history dates back to 1984. The 14th “Zeltival” in 2008 had around 21000 visitors. From 1986 to 1999, the supporting association also co-organized Karlsruhe’s culture festival “Das Fest”.
