A colossal structure of steel and glass greets us. This is Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof a Category 1 station a major railway hub.
Built in 1913 the current Hauptbahnhof replaced an older station. The older station opened in 1843. It was designed by Friedrich Eisenlohr. This original station was a through station. A locomotive depot was nearby. There was also a freight yard and a central workshop.
The original station had Irish gauge tracks. These were changed to standard gauge in 1855. More lines connected over the years. The Stuttgart line came in 1859. The Maxau Railway linked to the Palatinate in 1863. The Rhine Railway connected to Mannheim in 1870. The Kraichgau Railway followed in 1879. The strategic railway from Graben-Neudorf via Rastatt to Haguenau opened in 1895.
Increased traffic caused issues. Level crossing closures disrupted the city. The Baden parliament decided on relocation in 1902. The new station was built one kilometer south.
August Stürzenacker designed the new Hauptbahnhof. It opened on October 22/23 1913. Its construction impacted the city. Parts of the Stadtgarten were used. The construction even resulted in the felling of Europe’s oldest eastern cottonwood poplar.
The new station had platforms built on an embankment. Access was via a pedestrian underpass. The building blends neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles. Another underpass served arriving passengers. It’s now a pedestrian underpass again. A large steel concourse covered the platforms. The station has been expanded and modernized several times. Electrification happened in 1957. The forecourt was redesigned in the 1960s and 1990s.
