Fatima

Nestled amidst the scenic hills of Kandy, where the Mahaweli River winds its way through the Dumbara Valley, stands the Fatima Shrine. It’s a beacon of faith, a testament to the power of prayer and a symbol of unity, welcoming people of all creeds and backgrounds. The story of Fatima in Kandy begins not in Sri Lanka, but in a small village in Portugal. In 1917, three shepherd children witnessed apparitions of the Virgin Mary, who urged them to pray the rosary for world peace. This event sparked a global devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, and her image began to travel the world. In 1950, the statue of Our Lady of Fatima arrived in Sri Lanka, making its way to the small military hut-turned-chapel in Padiwatte. This humble structure, dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, was already a place of worship for the local community. The arrival of the Fatima statue marked a turning point. It was brought to the shrine via the Mahaweli River, carried by a Buddhist, a Catholic, and an Anglican, symbolizing the shrine’s inherent interfaith harmony. The small chapel, however, couldn’t contain the growing devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. A more fitting tribute was needed. Thanks to a generous donation of land from Mr. Balavendran Pillai, the construction of a new shrine began. On May 13, 1952, the foundation stone was laid, coinciding with the anniversary of the first apparition in Fatima. The new shrine was built with local jak and mahogany wood, its interior adorned with lily motifs, earning it the nickname “Lily of the Dumbara Valley”. The Fatima Shrine was completed in 1954 and dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima, also known as Our Lady of the Rosary. Today, the Fatima Shrine continues its mission of service and compassion. It houses a nursery school, a vocational training center, and even provides housing for the needy, irrespective of their background. The shrine embodies the message of Fatima: prayer, penance, and reparation. It’s a reminder that divine love transcends all human differences. The Fatima Shrine isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a vibrant community center, a testament to interfaith harmony, and a symbol of hope in the heart of Kandy.
