Imagine Jakarta’s outermost suburbs. That is where our story of Caringin begins. Caringin is not just a place. It is an administrative district within the Bogor Regency. This puts it in West Java, Indonesia.
Caringin is often seen as an extension of Jakarta. But Bogor city is actually closer. It lies just a few kilometers south. Consider it a bridge between the urban sprawl and the quieter regency of Bogor.
The area of Caringin District spans 45.44 square kilometers. In 2023, the estimated population was nearly 139,000. That is a density of about 3,100 people per square kilometer.
The administrative center of Caringin is Cimande Hilir. It is also known as Upper Cimande. The district is further divided into twelve villages. Each has its own unique character.
Let’s look back at Jakarta’s history. The area has been inhabited since the 4th century CE. It started as a Hindu settlement and port. Over time, various kingdoms and powers claimed it. These included the Tarumanagara, Sunda, and Banten. Later, the Dutch, Japanese, and finally Indonesian administrations governed the region.
Jakarta has had many names. Sunda Kelapa, Jayakarta, Batavia, and Djakarta. Each name reflects a different era.
The Dutch East India Company greatly influenced Jakarta. They developed the “old city” near the sea. Later, the Dutch government developed the “new city” to the south. Finally, modern Jakarta emerged after Indonesia’s independence in 1945.
Before the Dutch, the Sunda Kingdom thrived. In the early 13th century, the port of Sunda was strategic and thriving. Pepper from Sunda was known for its high quality. By the fourteenth century, Sunda Kelapa was a major trading port.
In 1522, the Portuguese sought an agreement with the Sunda Kingdom. They wanted access to the pepper trade. But Fatahillah, representing Demak, conquered the harbor in 1527. He renamed it Jayakarta.
In 1619, the Dutch seized control. They destroyed Jayakarta and built a new city. They officially named it Batavia in 1621.
After the Dutch East India Company went bankrupt, the Dutch government took over. Batavia became the capital of the Dutch East Indies. The city gradually expanded southward.
During World War II, Japan occupied Batavia. They renamed it Jakarta. After the war, Indonesia declared independence. Jakarta officially became the national capital in 1949.
Today, Caringin stands as part of this vibrant history. It connects Jakarta to the Bogor Regency. It is a blend of urban and rural life in Indonesia.
