“Kurawa Cai,” a warrior’s whisper from the past echoes here in Karawaci Baru. This area within Tangerang City is more than just a modern district. It holds secrets dating back to the 16th century.
Karawaci Baru is a vibrant community within the Karawaci district. Karawaci itself is a sub-division of Tangerang City in Banten Province. It occupies 13.48 square kilometers. Mid-2023 estimates placed Karawaci’s population at over 193000 people. Karawaci Baru is one of sixteen urban communities within the Karawaci district. In mid-2022, its population was estimated to be around 15,909.
But where does the name Karawaci come from? Some say it’s derived from “Kampung Rawa Cina” meaning Chinese swamp village. This refers to the area’s history with Chinese communities. Legend says a Chinese Lieutenant named Oey Djie San was appointed by the Dutch. He was to lead the settlement of this swampy area.
Another story tells of Raden Aria Wangsakara a hero who fought against Dutch colonization. He established Tangerang. According to this version, “Karawaci” comes from “Kurawa Cai”. Kurawa means warriors. Cai means water. These warriors guarded the Cisadane River. They were skilled fighters. They could move across the water undetected. They often attacked at night. Some even consider them forerunners to the Indonesian Navy.
Raden Aria Wangsakara’s warriors fought the Dutch for seven months. A ceasefire finally occurred in 1654. His forces captured Dutch logistics and weapon stores. The Dutch retreated to Pasar Baru Tangerang.
Karawaci Baru stands as a testament to the blend of cultures and histories. It is a place where Chinese settlers transformed swampland. It is also a place where warriors defended their land.
