Have you ever walked among giants? Not human giants but trees. At Muara Angke Wildlife Refuge you will. This sanctuary a hidden gem in Jakarta is a haven for wildlife. It’s a testament to nature’s resilience.

Muara Angke Wildlife Refuge was first protected in 1939 under the Dutch. It started as a small area but grew to 1344.62 hectares in the 1960s. Sadly human activities and environmental damage reduced its size. In 1988 it became a Nature Reserve. Then in 1998 it was officially declared a Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s now a vital protected area.

This unique refuge houses around 91 bird species. Twenty-eight are water birds. Sixty-three are forest birds. Seventeen are protected. Imagine spotting the majestic Milky Stork. It’s endangered and breeds nearby. The Javan Coucal another endangered bird also calls this sanctuary home. It’s one of the rarest birds in the world.

Muara Angke is bursting with life beyond birds. Long-tailed macaques live here. They play an important role. They eat the Red Mangrove-apple’s fruits and seeds. The seeds pass through them spreading the mangroves. It’s a natural cycle of life and regeneration. Small-clawed otters are also here but they are elusive. Nocturnal creatures they are rarely seen.

Reptiles too thrive here. Water monitors and reticulated pythons are among the more familiar inhabitants. There are also Javan Spitting Cobras and Banded Kraits. Less common are the Mangrove Snake and Oriental Whip-snake. Local residents even report the presence of estuarine crocodiles.

The vegetation is rich and diverse. Thirty plant species have been recorded. Eleven of those are true mangrove species. You’ll see bakau Rhizophora and grey mangroves. You might even spot the red mangrove-apple or the aptly-named blind-your-eye mangrove. Other trees like tamarind and beach almond enhance the refuge’s biodiversity.

Muara Angke Wildlife Refuge is more than just a sanctuary. It’s a living testament to the beauty of nature. It’s a reminder of the importance of conservation. It is a place where you can connect with nature. A place where even in a bustling city like Jakarta you can find peace. So explore this hidden treasure of Jakarta. Learn about the biodiversity that thrives here. Let the giants of Muara Angke fill you with awe.
