Since 1952, Switzerland has had an official presence in Indonesia. But the ties stretch back even further. As early as the 17th century, Swiss citizens began settling in Indonesia. In 1863, a Swiss consulate opened in Batavia which is now Jakarta. Another followed in Medan in 1916.

The Embassy of Switzerland represents Swiss interests. It covers political, economic, financial, and legal matters. Science, education, and culture are also within its purview. The embassy also handles ASEAN-related affairs and Timor-Leste. Jakarta is where the ASEAN secretariat is located. Switzerland has held sectoral dialogue partner status with ASEAN since July 2016.

Switzerland recognized Indonesia in 1949. This happened after Indonesia gained independence from the Netherlands in 1945. In 2021, Switzerland and Indonesia celebrated 70 years of diplomatic relations. These relations officially began on November 2, 1951.

Indonesia is a priority country for Switzerland’s economic cooperation. This is according to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs which is SECO. Indonesia is the most important destination for Swiss direct investment in Asia after Japan, Singapore, and China. Switzerland is one of the largest European investors in Indonesia. Over 150 Swiss companies are active in Indonesia today. These companies have created more than 50000 jobs.
