Beneath Jakarta’s skyline sits a beacon of knowledge. It is the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta. But what makes this university so special?

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta began as ADIA in 1957. ADIA means Akademi Dinas Ilmu Agama or State Academy of Islamic Sciences. Its goal was simple. It was to educate teachers of Islamic religion. These teachers were needed in public and private schools.

The academy grew and changed. In 1960, it became part of IAIN Yogyakarta. Then in 1963, it became IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah. Finally, in 2002, it transformed into Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta. This change reflects its wider mission.

The university has a rich history. Before Indonesia’s independence, Muslim leaders wanted higher Islamic learning. Dr. Satiman Wirjosandjojo tried to start Pesantren Luhur. But Dutch rulers resisted.

In 1940, the Islamic Religious Teachers Association founded the Islamic High School. The Japanese occupation interrupted it. But the idea lived on. Muslim leaders formed a foundation led by Mohammad Hatta. They established the Islamic Academy of Higher Education in 1945.

The need for religious civil servants grew. The Faculty of Religion became the State Islamic University in 1950. It aimed to deepen Islamic studies.

ADIA was founded in 1957. It aimed to train modern religion teachers. The curriculum covered many subjects. These subjects included Islamic Jurisprudence Fiqh and Philosophy Falsafa.

In 1960, ADIA joined with PTAIN Yogyakarta. Together, they formed the State Islamic Institute. In 2002, it became Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta. This change broadened its mandate.

The university now integrates general knowledge with Islamic teachings. New departments opened including psychology and economics. Cooperation agreements were signed with McGill University.

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta has three campuses. Campus 1 is on Ir. H. Djuanda Street. It houses the Rectorate Building and the Main Library. Campus 2 is on Kertamukti Street. It includes the Postgraduate School. Campus 3 is on Tarumanegara Street. It houses the Faculty of Adab and Humanities.

The university celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2007. For half a century, it has transmitted knowledge. It has also supported nation building.

Today, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta is a leading institution. It holds a unique position in Indonesia. It symbolizes progress in socio-religious development.

The university’s motto is Knowledge, Piety, Integrity. It reflects its commitment to excellence. It prepares students to contribute to society. Its graduates have become notable figures. They include Harun Nasution and Azyumardi Azra.

Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta continues to evolve. It integrates Islamic values with modern knowledge. It prepares leaders for Indonesia and the world. It is a beacon of light. It illuminates the path to a better future.
