Why is it called Pondok Petir? This unassuming neighborhood in Depok West Java holds a fascinating secret. Pondok Petir translates to Thunderbolt Village. Many believe this name originates from the sheer number of thunderstorms that once plagued this area. Locals recount tales of people struck by lightning. These tragic events occurred mostly before the year 2000. Since then lightning strikes have been less frequent.

Pondok Petir’s history is rich in speculation. One intriguing theory revolves around a unique tree. The ‘petir’ tree resembled the petai tree. These trees were abundant in the 18th century during the Dutch colonial era. They were apparently so numerous that they gave the area its name. However these trees vanished around 1970. Today only older residents remember them. They describe the petir tree as having a white trunk and large fruit. The fruit however was inedible.

Another version is related to the region’s high frequency of lightning strikes. Depok is situated between highlands and lowlands. This creates unique atmospheric conditions. These conditions apparently made the area particularly prone to severe thunderstorms. One study conducted in 2002 even recorded some of the world’s highest lightning currents in Depok. Specifically in its western part. This aligns perfectly with Pondok Petir’s location in West Depok. This makes the name even more fitting.

Even today residents of Pondok Petir experience more frequent intense thunderstorms than other areas. They have become accustomed to the intense electrical activity. Visitors however are often surprised by the frequency of lightning. There are still occasional reports of electronic equipment damaged by lightning strikes. There are even stories of trees struck by lightning.

The true origin of Pondok Petir’s name remains shrouded in mystery. There is no official documentation to definitively answer the question. Several versions of the story exist. Each adding to the intrigue surrounding this unique village. But one thing is for certain. Pondok Petir’s name continues to capture the imagination. It speaks to a powerful relationship between this community and the dramatic power of nature. The legacy of the thunderbolt lingers in this West Depok neighborhood.
