It was then known as the Departement van Binnenlands Bestuur. Its duties were overseeing the police. It also dealt with transmigration and agrarian matters. This continued until the Japanese occupation in 1942.

This new Department was the first government department established under Indonesia’s Presidential Cabinet. Its name changed several times reflecting shifts in the political landscape and constitution.

In 2010 the nomenclature changed. The Department of Home Affairs became the Ministry of Home Affairs. This was in accordance with a Ministerial regulation. The change reflected a broader shift in governmental structure.

In case both the president and vice president are unable to serve. The constitution designates a temporary leadership troika. This includes the ministers of Foreign Affairs Home Affairs and Defense. This guarantees continued government stability during times of crisis. This unique provision reflects the Kemendagri’s central place in Indonesian governance.
