Seven thousand spectators. That’s the roar I hear. The Istana Olahraga Gelora Bung Karno vibrates with energy.

This isn’t just any arena. It’s a piece of Indonesian history. Built in 1961 it hosted the Thomas Cup that same year. The Istana Olahraga Gelora Bung Karno was part of a larger complex a vision of President Sukarno. He wanted a world-class sports center for the 1962 Asian Games. Architect Friedrich Silaban helped bring that vision to life. He even persuaded Sukarno to move the complex from a congested central location to the more spacious Senayan area.

The Istana Olahraga Gelora Bung Karno has seen it all. The 1962 Asian Games. Badminton tournaments. The Thomas Cups. Countless concerts. Tina Turner’s voice once echoed through these walls. So did the music of New Kids on the Block and Take That. The energy of Bruno Mars and Maroon 5 filled this space. Even the legendary Avril Lavigne performed here.

It wasn’t always smooth sailing. During the Suharto era the complex was renamed Gelora Senayan. The Istana Olahraga Gelora Bung Karno became Istora Senayan. This was part of a broader de-Sukarnoization campaign. The original name was eventually restored under President Abdurrahman Wahid.

The Istora underwent major renovations from 2016-2018. The old U-shaped lobby was removed. The capacity was reduced from 9500 to 7166. The old wooden bleachers were replaced by modern grey seating. But some brown wooden bleachers remain a nod to the past.

The Istana Olahraga Gelora Bung Karno nearly hosted the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. That didn’t happen. It was moved to a new arena within the complex. The Istora did however host the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup.

This place isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a living monument to Indonesia’s sporting achievements. It’s a stage for unforgettable performances. It’s a place where history and excitement collide. The Istana Olahraga Gelora Bung Karno. A legacy that continues to inspire.
