In 1974, a seed of knowledge was planted in Jakarta. This seed would blossom into what we know today as Binus University. Originally named Modern Computer Course, it was a modest training institute. Fast forward to our present location. Binus University now stands as a testament to the power of vision and hard work. The university’s founders, Joseph Wibowo Hadipoespito and Theresia Widia Soerjaningsih, dreamed of building an institution that would contribute to Indonesia’s development through education. Their combined philosophies, the “3K Strategy” of opportunity, courageous responsibility, and hard work, and the additional “3K’s” of good fortune, willingness, and belief in God, shaped the university’s ethos. Binus University officially became a university on August 8, 1996. This marked a major milestone in its journey. Before that, in 1981, Modern Computer Course had evolved into the Computer Engineering Academy (ATK). ATK focused on informatics and informatics management. By 1985, it had become AMIK Bina Nusantara, recognized as the best Computer Academy in 1986. The continued growth led to the establishment of STMIK Bina Nusantara in 1986, offering undergraduate programs. AMIK and STMIK merged in 1987, solidifying Binus University’s position as a comprehensive educational institution. Even after achieving university status, Binus University continued to expand. New faculties were added. Existing faculties were restructured. This ongoing evolution reflects the university’s commitment to adapting to the changing needs of society and industry. Binus University isn’t just about classrooms and lectures. It’s about empowering individuals to build and serve the nation. The university’s name, Bina Nusantara, meaning “Building the Archipelago,” encapsulates this very mission.
