Beneath this sky stands the Salih Paşa Cami a testament to time and faith. This mosque carries more than just bricks and mortar. It echoes stories of scholars, pashas and everyday devotion.

Originally built in Fatih Sultan Mehmet Han period this sacred space owes its existence to Tokatlı Paşmakçı Hüsameddin Efendi. He was a scholar also known as İbn-i Meddas. Hüsameddin Efendi once served as the mufti of Amasya in 1442. He even established the Hüsamiye Madrasa there. Drawn to Istanbul for its conquest, he settled in the Cibali neighborhood after the city fell.

In 1456, Hüsameddin Efendi passed away. He was buried in the mosque’s grounds. His gravestone bears the inscription “Ebu’l-feth Sultan Mehmet Han’ın mestçibaşısı”. This translates to “chief shoe maker of Ebu’l-feth Sultan Mehmet Han”.

The name Salih Paşa Cami came later. In 1647, Salih Paşa added a fountain to the mosque’s walls. This act of charity forever linked his name to this holy place. Though officially named after Salih Paşa, some still call it Paşmakzade Mescidi or İbn-i Meddas Mescidi honoring its original founder.

Over the centuries the Salih Paşa Cami has seen its share of changes. It was renovated in 1830. Then in 1912, Zeynep Hanım a philanthropist restored Salih Paşa’s fountain. A major restoration occurred between 1977 and 1980. This added a second floor to the structure.

Entering from Salih Paşa Caddesi you’ll find a marble staircase leading to the entrance. Unlike some mosques this one lacks a traditional last congregation area. You step directly into the prayer hall or harim. Two wooden columns support the upper gallery. The east wall features three arched windows. You’ll notice one window on the west side has been sealed.

The Salih Paşa Cami’s minaret is uniquely positioned. Instead of the usual corner placement it stands parallel to the qibla wall in the middle section. The minaret is plastered with cement. Bricks placed vertically below the balcony add a touch of detail. Iron bars form the balcony railings.

On the courtyard side you’ll see faucets for ablutions a place for ritual washing. Marble steps lead down to the toilets below the courtyard. The Salih Paşa Cami stands as a living monument. It embodies faith, history, and the enduring spirit of Istanbul.
