“Three grapes are your destiny.” Imagine hearing those words in a dream. This is the story of Takkeci Ibrahim Aga Mosque. It is a tale of divine intervention and architectural beauty.

The Takkeci Ibrahim Aga Mosque stands outside the old Byzantine land walls. It marks the road to Edirne. This mosque is more than just a place of worship. It is a testament to faith and craftmanship.

Ibrahim Aga, a local craftsman of soft felt dervish caps, dreamt repeatedly. In his dream, he was told of three grapes. They awaited him in Baghdad. They grew under a date palm.

Driven by this vision, Ibrahim Aga traveled to Baghdad. He found the place as described. As he ate the grapes, a man appeared. Ibrahim Aga shared his dream. The man scoffed at the journey for mere grapes. He said he dreamt of gold under a cap-maker’s house in Istanbul but wouldn’t bother to go.

Ibrahim Aga realized this was a divine sign. Returning to Istanbul, he dug where the man indicated. He found three chests of gold. With this wealth, Ibrahim Aga built our beautiful mosque. Its construction took twenty years. He even established a foundation to maintain it.

Completed in 1592, the Takkeci Ibrahim Aga Mosque became more than a mosque. It was a small complex. It included a Quranic school and two water fountains. It even served as a Halveti tekke.

Look closely at the mosque’s walls. You will see stunning 16th-century Iznik tiles. These tiles feature vibrant colors like red and blue. Large floral panels decorate the walls. The mihrab niche is adorned with tiles. Above it, a prayer is inscribed. Grape designs reflect Ibrahim Aga’s dream.

Notice the wooden dome inside. It is a rare concealed dome. Gilt stalactites and a calligraphic medallion adorn it. Light streams through twenty-eight windows. The upper windows have colored glass. A wooden balcony runs along the northwest wall.

The minaret stands attached to the northeast facade. It features a single stalactite balcony. A fountain built by Dervis Pasa is nearby.

Sadly, time and progress have taken their toll. The E-5 highway cut off the mosque in the 1950s. Industrialization erased its neighborhood. Restoration efforts continue to preserve this gem. The Takkeci Ibrahim Aga Mosque requires urgent full-scale restoration.

The Takkeci Ibrahim Aga Mosque reminds us of a cap-maker’s dream. It shows us his faith. It also embodies stunning artistry. May it continue to inspire for generations.
