Do you hear the call to prayer? It resonates from the Kurban Nasuh Baba Cami. This mosque stands as a testament to Istanbul’s layered past. Let’s uncover its story together.

The Kurban Nasuh Baba Cami is not just a building. It is a place of worship with a rich history. Sheikh Kurban Nasuh Baba founded it in 1587. The mosque is located where Bu00fcyu00fck Selimiye Caddesi and Ayin Sokau011fu0131 meet in u00dcsku00fcdar’s Ahmediye neighborhood.

Over time the structure deteriorated. In the 1600s El-Hac Ebu Bekir added a minber to the Kurban Nasuh Baba Cami. This transformed it from a simple prayer site into a full-fledged mosque. Sadly, the mosque was later destroyed. But it was rebuilt in 1974.

The Kurban Nasuh Baba Cami sits on a sloping piece of land. This makes it elevated above the street. Its exterior window frames are made of solid marble. The minaret on the right side has survived in its original form. Kurban Nasuh Baba himself had it built.

The founder of the Kurban Nasuh Baba Cami is buried in front of the mihrab. The mosque is also known as Kurbau011fu0131 Nasuh Cami. Ayin Sokak got its name from the Rufai ceremonies held at the mosque. Bu00fcyu00fck Selim Pau015fa Caddesi is named after Grand Vizier Benderli Mehmet Selim Su0131rru0131 Pau015fa.

In 1811, the Kurban Nasuh Baba Cami became a Rufai lodge. This happened after Sheikh Nuri Efendi transformed it. A tomb was added after his death in 1856. Inside the tomb are three sarcophagi. One belongs to Sheikh Mehmet Nuri Efendi. He died in 1856. Another belongs to Sheikh Tevfik Efendi, who died in 1899. The third is for Hediye Sultan Hanu0131m. She was the daughter of Sheikh Nuri Efendi.

The tomb also holds the graves of Hacu0131 Mehmet Hulusi Efendi and u0130brahim Edhem Sururi Efendi. Kurban Nasuh’s grave is on a raised platform facing the courtyard. Two unmarked graves are near the tomb’s entrance.

Today the Kurban Nasuh Baba Cami stands as a reconstructed building. It has a single-story stone tomb and open tombs in the courtyard. The structure reflects the original design. It connects the present to centuries past.

The Kurban Nasuh Baba Cami is more than stones and mortar. It embodies faith, history and the spirit of Istanbul. Its story whispers through the streets of u00dcsku00fcdar. It reminds us of the enduring power of belief and tradition.
