Hidden within the bustling streets of Fatih stands the Mimar Sinan Mescidi. This unassuming mosque holds a captivating story. It is a testament to the genius of Mimar Sinan himself. He built it as a personal act of devotion. In his own words a humble offering.

The Mimar Sinan Mescidi was completed in 1573. It sits on Akşemseddin street near Vatan street. Restoration and landscaping were completed in 2011. It has a unique rectangular design. The walls are built with a layer of cut stone and two layers of brick. The mosque features two sections a covered one and an open one. These were used for different purposes.

The courtyard entrance is cleverly placed between the mosque and its minaret. This small detail demonstrates Sinan’s architectural mastery. The minaret stands 10 meters tall. It’s made of the finest cut stone. It has a unique octagonal shaft topped with a small dome. Each side of this unusual minaret has a window.

The interior is equally remarkable. The prayer hall’s layout is distinctive. Its L-shaped design maximizes space. The women’s section is accessible via an iron staircase from the muezzin’s gallery in the north. The wooden pulpit sadly destroyed in a fire is a loss. Yet the existing mihrab a simple but elegant structure is beautiful.

The mosque’s history is not without trials. A fire in 1918 left only the minaret and walls standing. The mosque was later rebuilt. This was based on Cornelius Gurlitt’s pre-1918 sketches. Ali Saim Ülgen’s restoration drawings and information from 1973 excavations were also crucial. The minaret itself underwent repairs in 1938 and 1962. It survived the fire with minimal damage.

The Mimar Sinan Mescidi is more than just a place of worship. It’s a small yet significant monument. It demonstrates Mimar Sinan’s innovative approach to design. Its unusual shape fits seamlessly into its surrounding urban fabric. It remains a hidden gem. A quiet testament to architectural brilliance. This humble mosque speaks volumes about its creator’s legacy.
