Envision a sea of Ottoman flags fluttering proudly. This is the Istanbul Naval Museum, a treasure trove of Turkey’s maritime history. Established in 1897, the Istanbul Naval Museum is not just a repository of artifacts. It is a vibrant testament to the Ottoman Navy’s legacy.

The Istanbul Naval Museum is located in the Beşiktaş district. It stands as Turkey’s largest maritime museum. It boasts a collection of around 20,000 pieces. The Istanbul Naval Museum is also Turkey’s first military museum. It is connected to the Turkish Naval Forces Command.

Inside the Istanbul Naval Museum, prepare to be amazed by the sheer variety of exhibits. One of the most remarkable items is the Tarihi Kadırga. This late 16th or early 17th-century Ottoman galley is a sight to behold. Radiocarbon dating confirms its age. It is the only surviving original galley in the world. Its wooden hull is the oldest continuously maintained one globally. Sultan Murad III and Sultan Mehmed IV reigned during its construction.

In the early 21st century, a new exhibition building was constructed. Construction began in 2008 and it reopened in 2013. The building spans 20,000 square meters with two floors above ground and one below. The basement displays figureheads, ship models, and Byzantine chains. These chains once blocked the Golden Horn’s entrance during the 1453 conquest of Constantinople. The upper floors showcase imperial caiques.

Imagine the delicate restoration work on display at the Istanbul Naval Museum. The museum conserves items damaged by heat, light, humidity, and even vandalism.

The Istanbul Naval Museum’s story began with Bozcaadalı Hasan Hüsnü Pasha. He was the Ottoman Minister of the Navy. With Sultan Abdülhamid II’s permission, he established the museum. Its first location was the Imperial Shipyard on the Golden Horn. In 1961, it moved to Beşiktaş. It opened to the public ten years later. A design competition in 2005 led to the new building’s construction. The museum reopened in its current form in 2013.

The Istanbul Naval Museum displays Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s boats. These rowboats emphasize Atatürk’s deep connection to the sea.

The imperial caiques are long, narrow rowboats used by Ottoman sultans. These boats were used on the Bosphorus and Golden Horn. They were ornately decorated. The floral patterns symbolized the power of the Ottoman throne.

The throne of the Ottoman Naval Academy is another highlight. Sultan Abdülmecid I used it from 1851 to 1852. He began attending naval examinations in 1848.

Ship figures from Ottoman ships are also on display. Nameplates, coats of arms, and figureheads offer glimpses into naval history. The escutcheon and coat of arms from the ironclad Orhaniye are present.

The Istanbul Naval Museum’s second floor continues with imperial caiques. It shifts focus to the Ottoman and Turkish Navies. The Aziziye ironclad’s escutcheon and coat of arms are exhibited.

The standard of Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha is a powerful symbol. He secured Ottoman dominance in the Mediterranean. Navigational instruments showcase the tools of maritime exploration.

A scale model of the battleship Sultan Osman-ı Evvel tells a complex story. Originally ordered by Brazil, it was seized by the British and renamed HMS Agincourt. This event fueled resentment in the Ottoman Empire.

The basement features historical diving equipment. This collection chronicles the evolution of underwater exploration. Equipment from the battleship Yavuz is also displayed.

The Istanbul Naval Museum is more than a museum. It’s an immersive journey into the heart of Turkish naval history. Its vast collection and engaging exhibits offer something for everyone.
