In 16th-century Istanbul, a grand vision took shape. Paşadere Su Kemeri, also known as Evvelbent Aqueduct, stands as a testament to that vision. This impressive structure, nestled between Bahçeköy and Kemerburgaz, is a vital piece of the Kırkçeşme Water Facility. Commissioned by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent and brought to life by the renowned architect Sinan, Paşadere Su Kemeri was completed between 1563 and 1564. Originally called Balıklızade, it later earned the name Paşa, drawing water from the nearby Paşa stream. The aqueduct stretches 102 meters in length and rises 16.4 meters high. Its thirteen bays, each spanning 5 meters, create a rhythmic pattern against the landscape. As part of the extensive Kırkçeşme Water Works system, Paşadere Su Kemeri has been remarkably well-preserved. It remains largely intact, a testament to Sinan’s masterful design and the importance of water to the city. The surrounding foliage can obscure the view, especially during the summer months. Imagine the challenge of constructing such a massive structure in this terrain, a feat of engineering and human endeavor. Paşadere Su Kemeri reminds us of the ingenuity of the past and the enduring legacy of Istanbul’s rich history.
