Ever wonder how Istanbul became the imperial capital? Look around you. You are standing before AnadoluhisarI. This medieval Ottoman fortress whispers tales of sieges and sultans.
AnadoluhisarI also known as the Anatolian Castle, stands proudly on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. Sultan Bayezid I built it between 1393 and 1394. He planned a siege of Constantinople. This fortress was a key part of that strategy.
Strategically positioned, AnadoluhisarI occupies the narrowest point of the Bosphorus. Here, the strait is a mere 660 meters wide. Imagine the control it exerted over maritime traffic. The Goksu Creek borders the site to the south. Roman temple ruins dedicated to Uranus once stood here.
AnadoluhisarI served mainly as a watch fort. Its quadratic main tower rises 25 meters high. It stands within irregular pentagon walls. Five watchtowers punctuate the corners.
Bayezid’s blockade of Constantinople began in 1394. The Crusade of Nicopolis interrupted his campaign. His defeat at the Battle of Ankara ended it. An 11-year civil war followed. Mehmed I took the throne after this conflict.
Mehmed II, Bayezid’s grandson, strengthened AnadoluhisarI. He added a two-meter-thick wall. Three additional watchtowers were added. He added a warehouse and living quarters. Mehmed II built RumelihisarI across the Bosphorus. Together, these fortresses strangled maritime traffic in 1453. This helped the Ottomans conquer Constantinople. It became their new imperial capital, Istanbul.
After the conquest, AnadoluhisarI became a customs house and military prison. Over centuries, it fell into disrepair. In the early days of the Republic of Turkey, the Ministry of Culture restored it between 1991 and 1993.
Today, AnadoluhisarI offers a picturesque view. It sits beside timber yali homes. These define the neighborhood. It functions as a historical site. However, it is not open to the public. But you can still get a sense of the fortress’s dominance over the area from here. The most recent restoration started in 2021. It was conducted by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
