Behold this ancient granite giant. The Column of Marcian stands before you a testament to a bygone era. It is a Roman honorific column erected in Constantinople long ago. This magnificent structure was dedicated to Emperor Marcian who reigned from 450 to 457 AD.

The Column of Marcian is more than just a pillar of stone. It’s a silent storyteller. Its history is etched in its very being. It whispers tales of the Roman Empire’s enduring legacy in Istanbul. The column’s grey Egyptian granite hails from Syene now Aswan. Its journey across vast distances speaks volumes of Roman engineering prowess.

The prefect of the city Tatianus oversaw its construction. This was between 450 and 452 AD. A Latin inscription proudly proclaims this fact. It remains a vital clue to the column’s history. The inscription was originally filled with bronze letters now long gone. The inscription tells us to ‘Behold this statue of the princeps Marcian’. It speaks of Tatianus’s dedication. Sadly the statue itself is lost to time. Only the column remains.

The base of the Column of Marcian is intricately decorated. Four slabs of white marble encase it. Three sides bear the IX monogram. This early Christian symbol resembles a wheel. It’s a combination of the Greek letters Iota and Chi for Jesus and Christ. The fourth side depicts two genii supporting a globe. These figures are the reason for the column’s Turkish name Kiztasi. This translates to “girl’s stone”. Ottoman-era interpretations associated the genii with a mythical girl.

The Column of Marcian’s Corinthian capital is adorned with aquilae. These are eagles the insignia of Roman legions. Its orientation is fascinating. The base points northwest/southeast. The capital aligns north/south. This may have ensured the statue looked towards the nearby Church of the Holy Apostles. This church is now the site of the Fatih Mosque.

The Column of Marcian is a silent observer of centuries. It has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. It stands as a symbol of resilience and enduring history. Even today it continues to inspire wonder and awe. It stands proudly in the heart of Istanbul. This is a true testament to the city’s rich and layered past. The Column of Marcian is a must-see for any visitor to this amazing city.
