Right before us stands a testament to friendship and strategic ambition. This is the German Fountain. It graces Sultanahmet Square in Istanbul. The German Fountain’s story began with Kaiser Wilhelm II’s visit in 1898.

Germany sought closer ties with the Ottoman Empire. The fountain was commissioned to mark the second anniversary of his visit. It became a symbol of German-Ottoman friendship. But there were hidden agendas.

Wilhelm II wanted approval for the Berlin-Baghdad Railway. This railway would link Berlin to the Persian Gulf. It would extend to British India via Persia. The railway promised a quick route from Europe to Asia. It would facilitate German exports and military transport.

Sultan Abdülhamid II was cautious. He suspected German motives regarding Ottoman oil wealth. The German Fountain became a diplomatic chess piece. It masked deeper strategic interests.

The German Fountain was designed in the neo-Byzantine style. Architect Spitta drew the plans. Architect Schoele oversaw construction. German architect Carlitzik and Italian architect Joseph Anthony contributed.

The fountain was built in Germany. It was transported piece by piece to Istanbul. Assembly was completed in 1900. The octagonal dome rests on eight marble columns. Golden mosaics adorn the dome’s interior.

The German Fountain stands where a tree once stood. This tree was known as the Vakvak Tree. It was also called the Bloody Plane. In 1656, the Janissary rebellion saw officials hanged from its branches. This dark history contrasts with the fountain’s message of friendship.

The German Fountain features seven brass spouts over basins. A bronze dome tops the central reservoir. Eight porphyry columns support this dome. Arches display monograms of Abdülhamid II and Wilhelm II. Abdülhamid’s tughra appears on a green background. Wilhelm’s “W” is on Prussian blue.

The German inscription reads: “Wilhelm II Deutscher Kaiser stiftete diesen Brunnen…”. It translates to: “German Kaiser Wilhelm II endowed this fountain…”. It was a thankful remembrance of his visit to Sultan Abdülhamid II. An Ottoman inscription is also present. Ahmet Muhtar Bey’s poem commemorates Wilhelm II’s visit.

Sadly, the German Fountain has seen tragedy. In 2016, a terrorist bombing killed 12 German tourists and one Turkish citizen. This event underscores the fragility of peace. It highlights the importance of remembrance.

Today, the German Fountain is a popular attraction. It reminds us of complex historical ties. It symbolizes diplomacy and strategic ambition. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Reflect on its layered history. The German Fountain stands as a silent witness. It represents friendship, ambition, and remembrance in the heart of Istanbul.
