In 1996, a transformation began at the Rebecca Sealy Building. It wasn’t built in 1996, no. Its story started much earlier, in 1866, as St. Mary’s Hospital. The Rebecca Sealy Building, originally a Catholic general hospital, served Galveston for over a century. Then, the Sealy & Smith Foundation stepped in, purchasing St. Mary’s and gifting it to the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). They renamed it the Rebecca Sealy Building, in honor of John Sealy’s wife, a key figure in the Sealy family’s history of supporting healthcare in Galveston. The Rebecca Sealy Building began its new life as a hub for psychiatric care, outpatient surgery, and research. Its eight stories buzzed with activity, a testament to the Sealy family’s enduring legacy. Then, in 2008, Hurricane Ike struck. The devastating storm flooded the UTMB campus, impacting every facility, including the Rebecca Sealy Building. The inpatient psychiatric unit had to close. The building faced extensive renovations, transforming from a hospital into offices and simulation labs. The Rebecca Sealy Building stands as a symbol of resilience. It reflects Galveston’s enduring spirit in the face of adversity. While its role has shifted, the building remains a vital part of the UTMB campus. It serves as a reminder of the Sealy family’s unwavering commitment to healthcare and the ongoing pursuit of knowledge and healing.
