Once a playground for Hawaiian royalty and the elite, Fort De Russy now stands as a testament to a fascinating blend of military history and public recreation. Fort De Russy isn’t your typical walled fortress. It’s a sprawling green space in the heart of Waikiki, open and inviting to all. Originally, this land belonged to Chun Afong, a prominent Chinese merchant. He hosted lavish parties, welcoming royalty, diplomats, and military officers to his stunning villa. Imagine the opulence, the vibrant gatherings against the backdrop of Waikiki’s natural beauty. In 1904, Afong sold the property to the US Army for $28,000. This marked the beginning of Fort De Russy’s military chapter. The Army constructed Battery Randolph and Battery Dudley, powerful coastal defenses designed to protect Honolulu Harbor. Battery Randolph, a formidable structure, housed two massive 14-inch guns that could hurl projectiles an astounding 14 miles. These were the largest guns in the Pacific at the time, a symbol of American military might. During World War II, Fort De Russy played a vital role, though its guns remained silent. A practice firing shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor sent shockwaves through Waikiki, shattering windows in the nearby Royal Hawaiian and Moana hotels. The incident underscored the raw power of these weapons and led to the decision to keep them quiet. After the war, Fort De Russy’s military function diminished. The guns were dismantled, and the land was repurposed. Battery Dudley was demolished, but Battery Randolph found new life as the home of the US Army Museum of Hawaii. Today, Fort De Russy is a vibrant public park. The museum within Battery Randolph offers a glimpse into the fort’s history and the broader story of the US Army in the Pacific. The Hale Koa Hotel, a haven for military personnel and their families, stands on the grounds, offering respite and recreation. Fort De Russy’s journey reflects the evolving relationship between military strategy and public life. It’s a place where the echoes of powerful artillery blend with the laughter of children playing on the grassy lawns, a unique intersection of history and leisure in the heart of Waikiki.
