Ever wondered what lies beneath the waves off Waikiki? The Atlantis Submarine Pier is your gateway to that mystery. Right here you stand at the edge of an extraordinary adventure.

Atlantis Submarines didn’t begin here in Honolulu. It started in 1985 with a visionary engineer Dennis Hurd. He launched the world’s first tourist submarine off Grand Cayman. His revolutionary idea transformed underwater exploration. His submarines weren’t just vessels they were portals to another world.

Hurd’s journey began with deep-sea submersibles for the oil industry. Witnessing the thrill of his clients exploring the ocean depths sparked a brilliant idea. He created Atlantis Submarines. The Atlantis I carried 28 passengers on hour-long tours. This innovative design allowed everyone to experience the underwater world. Before this only scuba divers could explore these depths. The success of the Atlantis I led to the Atlantis II which debuted at EXPO ’86 in Vancouver.

The story continues with the Atlantis III a larger 48-passenger submarine. This vessel became the US Coast Guard’s standard for certifying public-passenger submarines. Subsequent submarines were launched in Hawaii. This included the Atlantis XIV a 64-passenger behemoth. It remains the largest tourist submarine in the world.

Imagine descending in an air-conditioned cabin. Large viewports reveal a vibrant underwater world. You’ll see coral reefs teeming with life. Hawaiian fish green sea turtles sharks and eels. The Atlantis submarines even created artificial reefs. This is thanks to the efforts of Atlantis Hawaii in partnership with the University of Hawaii’s Sea Grant Program. They sank two airplanes and two ships to attract marine life. This is now home to a wealth of sea creatures.
