Did Koryo High School always have its current name? No. This esteemed institution, Koryo High School, traces its roots back to 1896. It was then known as the Sugakukai (Mathematical Society). Just a couple of years later, it became the Kenkyu Gakuen (Research Academy). In 1901, it adopted the name Shiritsu Hirojo Chugakko (Private Hirojo Middle School). The name finally changed to Koryo High School much later, upon the establishment of the high school section in 1948. Koryo High School, deeply woven into Hiroshima’s history, has witnessed significant events. The school was heavily damaged by the atomic bomb in 1945, a testament to the resilience of Hiroshima and its people. The school was rebuilt and has continued to thrive. Koryo High School has a long and proud tradition in baseball. The team, known as “Spring Hirojo”, has a history of national success. They won the National High School Baseball Invitational Tournament in 1926, 1991, and 2003. They have even achieved the remarkable feat of representing Hiroshima in all four major baseball tournaments – Spring Koshien, Summer Koshien, Meiji Jingu, and National Sports Festival. As of July 2024, they are the only high school to accomplish this. The school has also produced many professional baseball players. Beyond baseball, Koryo High School excels in various other sports like softball, boxing, tennis, and golf. The school motto, “Shitsu-Jitsu-Ken-Ko” (Quality, Truth, Health), underscores its commitment to holistic education. This is further emphasized by the school’s educational philosophy, “Education is Love”. Koryo High School also aims to cultivate students who challenge themselves with high aspirations and contribute to local and international communities. The school badge, revised in 1958, symbolizes the city’s flowing Taida River. It represents the spirit of progress, effort, and health. The school song, written by Shigeru Kusahara and composed by Yu Kawanoe, reflects the ideals and aspirations of the school. Koryo High School continues to inspire generations of students to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact on the world.
