Itsukushima

Gazing across the Seto Inland Sea, the majestic “floating” torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine beckons. Itsukushima Island, better known as Miyajima, or “Shrine Island,” has captivated hearts for centuries. The island itself is considered sacred. The iconic torii gate stands as a testament to this reverence, seemingly floating on the water at high tide. Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is dedicated to the three daughters of the sea deity Susano-o no Mikoto. The shrine’s current form is largely thanks to Taira no Kiyomori, a powerful figure who greatly contributed to its construction in 1168. He saw the goddesses as manifestations of Kannon. The island became the Taira family shrine. Itsukushima Shrine’s design evokes the image of a palace floating on the sea. The shrine complex includes the Honsha shrine, Sessha Marodo-jinja, and 17 other buildings. These structures, connected by covered corridors and adorned with bronze lanterns, create a mesmerizing scene. At high tide, the shrine appears to float, separated from the island. This design stems from ancient traditions when commoners, forbidden from the sacred island, approached by boat, passing through the torii gate. The grand torii gate, constructed from decay-resistant camphor wood, stands tall at 50 feet. The current gate was erected in 1875, though a gate has graced this spot since 1168. At low tide, visitors can walk to the gate and gather shellfish. At night, lights illuminate the torii, casting a magical glow. The shrine’s noh stage, dating back to 1590, hosted performances honoring the gods. Beyond the shrine, Miyajima offers more enchanting sights. Mount Misen, the island’s highest peak, provides panoramic views. The island’s vibrant maple trees paint the landscape crimson in autumn. Friendly sika deer, considered messengers of the gods, roam freely. Itsukushima, a harmonious blend of nature and spirituality, continues to inspire awe and reverence. It leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.
