Is this sturdy structure whispering tales of resilience? This is the Ernst-Walz-Brücke. It stands as the third bridge to grace this spot on the Neckar River, connecting the bustling districts of Bergheim and Neuenheim. The Ernst-Walz-Brücke has witnessed history unfold since its inauguration on April 14, 1928. Initially intended to provide access to a planned central cemetery, fate had other plans for the land it connected. The bridge, named after Heidelberg’s former mayor Ernst Walz, became a vital artery for the city. However, its story takes a somber turn during the tumultuous years of World War II. Like its counterparts, the Ernst-Walz-Brücke couldn’t escape the destructive grip of war. On March 29, 1945, retreating German forces made the devastating decision to demolish it, just one day before American troops arrived. Yet, from the ashes of conflict, the Ernst-Walz-Brücke rose again. Reconstructed in 1950, it stands as a testament to Heidelberg’s indomitable spirit, a symbol of resilience and renewal. Each time you cross this bridge, remember its journey through time, a silent witness to history’s ebb and flow.
