Did you ever hear of a church built with salt marsh lime? Hoed Kirke, nestled in the Danish countryside near Aarhus, has just such a tale to tell. Hoed Kirke is the southernmost of four churches in its parish. Its story begins long before its stones were laid, back in 1183. Bishop Svend of Aarhus, a man of significant landholdings, bequeathed a farm in Hoed to the Cistercian monks of Øm Abbey. These monks, renowned builders, were drawn to the area for its rich deposits of salt marsh lime. They extracted this precious material near Glatved, loaded it onto barges, and sailed it down to Randers. From there, it journeyed along the Gudenå River to Mossø, the future site of their magnificent abbey at Øm. But life wasn’t all work for these industrious monks. They needed a place of worship, a sanctuary for prayer. So, on land granted by the bishop, they constructed Hoed Kirke around 1200. The church bears unique architectural features, such as the open V-side of its tower, a characteristic of Djursland churches. The weapon house stands on foundations nearly a meter wide, a testament to the monks’ building prowess. Within its walls, gravestones adorned with carved flowers, each mentioned in the Bible, tell silent stories of lives lived and lost.
